I love my job.
I equate being a principal to being similar to one of those "dream jobs" you may have thought up as a kid - toy inventor, video game tester, professional athlete. In my role, I still get to do all of those kinds of things.
The "inventor" comes out as I work alongside my staff to discuss and plan quality, engaging tasks for students. The "tester" comes as those tasks are rolled out with the students, and the "athlete"... well, that still remains a dream, but I guess it comes out in my desire for students to be physically active during their structured Physical Education Classes, and their informal play times. I still do throw a pretty mean spiral.
Professionally, I believe that we as educators need to learn as we expect our students to learn. If we want to build a school culture that values risk-taking, collaboration, mastery and the skills and talents of each individual student, then we need to embody this in our professional work.
While I rely on my acquired skill set and experiences as a school leader to make decisions for the school, I am also guided by my role as parent. I try to make logical decisions that work for students, families, teachers and the school.
When I'm not at school, you can find me with my family, or out on the paths and trails with my Brittany (Spaniel), Scarlett. I enjoy all sports, notably hockey, football, and golf, and I also love the outdoors.
